Last month Microsoft announced that, after a lengthy beta testing period with as many as 100,000 testers participating, they have finally released Windows Home Server (WHS) to manufacturing.
Microsoft partners will receive the final code in the next few weeks which means new products built on WHS will likely hit the market sometime in the fall this year. Pricing for the product has not been announced but rumors are that the price will be between $500-$1,000 based on storage.
HP, Gateway and others have already announced they will be offering new media systems based on WHS code.
For those of you not familiar with the product, Windows Home Server is a hardware and software solution that enables families with multiple PCs to easily connect their digital experiences, providing a reliable and familiar way to organize, access, and automatically protect digital images, music, video, and personal documents.
I have been following the news on this product since I first heard about it at CES this year, and a lot of software makers are creating applications to run on it. In addition to centralized storage and backup, Windows Home Server also lets users access their digital content remotely and I just learned about a new add-in to WHS called LobsterTunes that allows you to stream music directly from WHS to your Windows Mobile phone via WiFi or 3G.
LobsterTunes comes with an MP3 player for your phone which allows you to:
-Play your entire music collection on your phone
-Play internet radio stations
-Find and view album art for all your music

LobsterTunes offers a 7 day free trial, and if you like it, it's only a one time fee of $20. I'm definitely excited about WHS and applications like this that can tie into my (not yet purchased) Windows Smartphone, get me even more jazzed.
