Landlines Fighting Back

At the NXTcomm07 conference, Home Phone Tunes introduced Ringboxx, the first product to give people a simple and entertaining way to personalize home phones with music and exclusive audio content. Ringboxx allows people to identify callers instantly, by using the ringtones they assign to friends, family or even unwanted 800 numbers. Just as ringtones are now a popular way to personalize mobile phones, the Ringboxx can transform a standard home phone by reflecting its owners personality.

You can play different songs based on the caller line ID, or you can assign specific songs to specific phone numbers, explained Kevin Kutcher, vice president of marketing for Home Phone Tunes. Home Phone Tunes has seen strong interest from service providers in its new offering.
Were in conversations with all of them, Kutcher said. They see it as part of a landline retention strategy.

According to Kirk Cameron, CEO of Home Phone Tunes, the companys research showed that 80% or more of people surveyed said they were interested in ringtones for their home phone.

There has been a lot of press about the inevitable extinction of traditional landlines with one recent report indicating that one in four people aged 18 to 24 had only cell phones, as did 29 percent of those aged 25 to 29.

I, for one, still have a landline, but would love to give it up if my wife would let me. Services like Home Phone Tunes certainly could help the landline providers keep those phones in homes awhile longer but eventually they, like the 8 track and the VHS, will become extinct.
